Once considered a "rare" tropical disease, Chikungunya has become a critical travel health topic for 2026. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the virus has seen a significant resurgence in popular destinations recently such as alarming outbreaks in Mauritius and South America.

The good news? For the first time, travellers from Bath have access to effective vaccines at Pulteney pharmacy

Whether you are backpacking through Asia or taking a luxury break in the Caribbean, this guide explains the disease, the new UK-licensed vaccines (IXCHIQ® and Vimkunya®), and how to travel safely.

What is Chikungunya?

Chikungunya is a viral disease spread to humans through the bites of infected Aedes mosquitoes. These are the same "day-biting" mosquitoes that spread Dengue and Zika.

The name comes from the Makonde language of Tanzania and translates to "to become contorted," describing the stooped appearance of sufferers dealing with the disease's hallmark symptom: severe joint pain.

The 2026 Danger Zones: Where is the Risk?

According to WHO and ECDC surveillance data from late 2025, several regions are experiencing "marked increases" in activity:

  • Indian Ocean: A major surge in cases has been reported in Mauritius and La Réunion. If you are planning a honeymoon or holiday here, vaccination is highly recommended.

  • The Americas: Brazil remains the global hotspot, but recent surges have also been noted in Paraguay, Bolivia, and parts of the Caribbean.

  • Europe: Locally acquired cases have now been confirmed in Southern France and Italy, proving the virus is adapting to temperate climates.

Typical Symptoms

Symptoms usually strike 4–8 days after a mosquito bite. While the fever often passes within a week, the joint pain can be crippling.

  • Sudden high fever (often >39°C)

  • Severe joint pain (arthralgia) — often debilitating

  • Muscle aches & Headache

  • Rash (appearing on the trunk and limbs)

Warning: Could it be fatal Yes, Chikungunya can lead to fatal outcomes. While many cases result in recovery, WHO reports indicate that severe disease can occur, particularly in vulnerable populations. In 2025 alone, WHO recorded over 150 Chikungunya-related deaths globally, with the Americas reporting the highest mortality rates.

  • Vulnerable Groups: WHO identifies newborns (infected during delivery), adults over 65, and those with underlying conditions (e.g., hypertension or diabetes) as being at the highest risk for severe complications or death.

  • Chronic Pain: Beyond the risk of death, WHO notes that joint pain can persist for months or even years, causing long-term disability.

New Protection: Chikungunya Vaccines in the UK

Until recently, bite prevention was the only defense. In 2025/2026, we now have access to two licensed vaccines at Pulteney Pharmacy Travel Clinic:

1. IXCHIQ® (Live Vaccine)

  • Type: Live-attenuated vaccine.

  • Dose: Single dose.

  • Licensed For: Adults aged 18+.

  • Important: As a live vaccine, it is not suitable for people with weakened immune systems (immunosuppressed) or pregnant women.

2. Vimkunya® (Non-Live Vaccine)

  • Type: VLP (Virus-Like Particle) vaccine.

  • Dose: Single dose (offers rapid protection).

  • Licensed For: Adults and children aged 12+.

  • Why it matters: This vaccine contains no live virus, making it a potentially safer option for those who cannot take live vaccines.

Safety Update for Travellers Over 65

Recent regulatory reviews have identified a safety signal with the live vaccine (IXCHIQ®) in older adults. Current UK guidance: If you are aged 65 or older, we strongly recommend a consultation to discuss the Vimkunya® vaccine or other alternatives, as the live vaccine may not be suitable for you. At Pulteney Pharmacy, our pharmacists conduct a rigorous safety check to ensure you receive the right vaccine for your age and medical history.

Prevention: The First Line of Defence

Vaccines are powerful, but bite avoidance remains essential, as mosquitoes in these areas also carry Dengue and Zika.

  1. Use Strong Repellent: Choose products with 50% DEET.

  2. Daytime Vigilance: These mosquitoes bite all day, from sunrise to sunset.

  3. Cover Up: Wear loose, long clothing treated with permethrin if possible.

  4. Remove Water: Eliminate standing water around your accommodation.
